EDITING EVALUATION

Premiere pro editing

I  edited my video on Premiere pro as this is the software I used for all my previous projects and I have a lot of experience with it. I started editing on the 18th of May and it took me 4 whole days at college to complete it, which doesn't seem long but I spent all day and many hours on it. The first thing I noticed when editing was how clear and high quality the clips came out on the mac. This was good as it looks a lot more professional when the footage is 4k.

I imported all the footage from one drive and then made bins for each separate scene, for example, one of them was called 'bath scene'. This helped me a lot when it came to putting the clips in the order that I wanted and being able to find certain ones easily. I started from the first bathroom scene bin and worked my way through them all until I had the rough draft that I hadn't put any effects onto yet. I wanted to edit the clips to the beat of the music to make the video flow better and be more visually pleasing and I tried to do this throughout to her lipsyncing as well. I had a few effects in mind that I wanted to try on some clips, then when it came to adding them, I screenshotted the screen to show how I did it and how it went.

Once I had edited my first draft, I wanted to include a Midnight Sky title at the start. At first, I used a PNG on top of the shot but after talking to Paul we agreed that it didn't work as the colour didn't match and also it ruined the first shot because it covered Amy's face.

I deleted the PNG 'midnight sky' logo and decided to create my own. I searched up what font was used in Mileys logo which was 'almond script' and downloaded it onto the mac. Then I was undecided between the colours red and green however I went for green so it didn't clash with the white background. I put the title on the fourth shot into the video so the beginning shots weren't ruined. I added a shadow and lens flare effect and made the graphic fade in and out for a seamless look.

This was my first time adding in text bubbles to premier pro and I found it much simpler that I thought. I texted one of my friends what I wanted it to say, screenshotted it and sent it to the mac. I then changed the picture into a PNG and dragged the file onto the timeline. I then mde keyframes for the text to move as she moves her phone as I wanted it to be more of an animation rather that a still image.

For this clip I used LED lights to make the room orange. However when it came to editing I wasn't happy with the colour and the quality was really low. I went onto colour and tried to adjust the exposure, saturation and tint but the quality was turning even worse and looked more grainy. In the end I chose to use a different clip that had different lighting and worked better in the overall video.

I wanted to add this logo at the end to finish off the video. It is the same PNG that I put at the start and didn't like but it works at the end. As the song and clips fade out this shows up to complete the video.

After feedback from paul and other studetns I removed the 'boyfriend' heading because it wasn't moving at the same time as the text and it looked messy. Even without the boyfriend heading, I think its obvious that it is her boyfriend texting her from what it says.

I searched up on YouTube how to overlap clips so that you could see one beneath the other as they play at the same time. This was very easy as all I had to do was put the clips on top of each other on the timeline then change the effect on the top clip to soft merge and then when it was played it had two layers. This created an eye opening effect to add interest, rather than raw footage the whole video

I also added in a basic graphic a the end to say I directed the video. The picture only shows my first attempt however in the end I went with a bold font and also added in the actor was Amy Locke.

For the ending verse of the song, I have a long clip that flashes for about ten seconds so I needed to make it aware to viewers that it contains flashing images. At first, I put a small text box in the bottom right corner but when I uploaded it onto youtube you could barely see it. I had to change this to make viewers more aware, so I spoke to Paul and we decided to have a look on the epilepsy action page to see legally what you should do when you want to post online content which could trigger seizures. On their website, it says  'If you feel there's a good reason why your content should break the W3C guidelines, then we strongly urge you to give a warning before the flashing starts. For example, on a video, the warning should be before the user starts to play the video'. For this reason, I added in a full screen with a warning sign that said 'The following video contains flashing images and strobe-like content. I am glad that I changed it and it is now a lot clearer and this will help with any legal action against my final video.

Finally, I exported my video in a media encoder. I used youtube ultra HD 4k which is what I used for my last music video and the quality came out amazing. As I was exporting it in such high quality it took about 40 minutes. Overall, I am happy with the editing that I did for this video and how it all came out. I feel like using it for my last video made me a lot more confident going into editing this one and I was more familiar with how to work the software.
